Visit to Chenies Manor House and Garden
Tuesday 14 April 2026, 12:30 - 16:00

The picturesque setting of the 15th and 16th Century brick Manor House in the tranquil village of Chenies conceals an intriguing history.

We will meet at 12:30 in the cafe for beverages, biscuits, and a welcome talk by Charles Macleod Matthews. Then there will be a private tour of the house which takes 45 minutes. The guides will take you through rooms visited by Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, revealing the history of the priest hole, escape tunnels and squint window.

Formerly known as Chenies Palace with its imposing tower and striking chimneys, it was once the seat of the Earls of Bedford and was witness to treason and imprisonment. Today it remains a family home and regularly features in major films and television programmes.

Following the house tour we will have a lunch of sandwiches, chocolate brownie, a glass of elderflower and coffee.

There will then be free time to go round the garden which takes about 1 hour. In 1594 Lucy, Countess of Bedford, influenced the lay out of the garden but it was neglected for many years. In 1956 Elizabeth Macleod Matthews reinstated the garden to its former Tudor fashion with a series of garden rooms. At this time of year the garden is renowned for its amazing tulip display with thousands of spring flowers in different varieties and planting combinations.

Price per person including refreshments on arrival and lunch £27.50.
